De-rotational osteotomy of the distal femur increases valgus knee alignment

A study published by the group of PD Sufian S. Ahmad, showed that supracondylar derotational osteotomy of the distal femur (osteotomy for reduction of the overall femoral antetorsion), results in an increase in the overall valgus alignment of the lower limb. This is resultant to the orientation of the antecurvature of the femur in space.

The image on the left shows an example of a patient undergoing derotational osteotomy at the supracondylar level of the distal femur. Note that the limb alignment shifted into more valgus.

The article has a major impact on surgical planning of osteotomies.
